10 SIMPLE STEPS FOR PLANTING A WINDOW BOX| THE CONTAINER GARDEN

We can grow food and make it look beautiful too! All you need is a little imagination and arranging some plants the way I explain in this post and voila! You get a beautiful garden.

STEP 1:Clean the window box with warm water and mild detergent.

STEP 2:  Place broken crocks or a layer of gravel over the drainage holes.

STEP 3: Half fill the window box with potting mix appropriate for your plants-soil based for permanent planting, multipurpose or soulless for seasonal planting.

STEP 4: Arrange your plants- still in their pots- into the pattern you want. Place the taller ones at the back of the box and the smaller and trailing plants at the front and sides. Remember that window box displays usually look best with a degree of symmetry.

STEP 5: Remove the plants and place them on the ground in the same positions they were in the window box.

STEP 6:  Tip the largest plant out of its pot, gently tease the roots out, and place it in its intended position. Using extra potting mix, firm the plant so that it is in its correct depth and position.

STEP 7: Continue to plant from side to side, starting with the largest plant. Firm in gently.

STEP 8: When the planting is finished, add extra potting mix until, when firmed in, it is just below the rim of the window box ( about 1 inch).

STEP 9:  Water carefully but thoroughly, and then allow the window box to drain before placing it in its final position.

STEP 10:  Don't forget to water, feed, and deadhead on a regular basis to get the best possible display from your window box. Use an organic high-potash fertilizer at least once a week.

Have you tried window boxes in your garden before? It is an easy way to grow food or flowers and beautify your space at the same time. I hope you try it!
