Before planting up your Container Garden, you need to have the right potting mix for your specific plant.
In this post, I want to mention a few different varieties that you will find in your local nursery, Hardware Store or wherever you get your gardening supplies.
With this guide, I hope to help you decide the right one for your Container Garden.
🌱 SOIL-BASED MIX: They also call it loam based mix, this contains high-quality soil as its main ingredient.
🌱 GERMINATING MIX: Formulated for sowing seeds and growing seedlings, however, if you want to plant alpines then you need a different one that you can buy in Nurseries.
🌱 STANDARD POTTING SOIL: this one has more fertilizer than the germinating mix does. It is also the most versatile and works for most plants.
ADVANTAGES
Free draining
Good Structure
Good aeration
Dries out slowly
Less likely to become waterlogged
Heavy; gives stability, especially to larger, more mature planting.
CAUTION: when it gets wet it becomes heavy, so this is NOT the kind of Potting Mix to add to a hanging basket, window boxes, especially where large containers are concerned.
🌱 SOILLESS OR LOAMLESS MIX:
This is a potting mix that contains no soil, they also are known as the multipurpose mix.
The main ingredient is Peat or Peat substitute ( peat-based mixes should be avoided because the extraction of Peat is environmentally damaging) instead choose a peat substitute, such as coir.
ADVANTAGES
Easy and clean to use
Economical
Lightweight
Great for balconies, roof gardens and for hanging baskets.
CAUTION:
Once dry, it's hard to absorb water, so you need to add compost to help it retain moisture.
It can become waterlogged.
Plants that have been growing in the soilless mix may not transplant into the garden too well.
It's low in nutrients; always incorporate a slow-release organic fertilizer.
🌱 MULTIPURPOSE POTTING SOIL
If you are not sure which one would work best for you, then going with a multipurpose potting soil is the right way to go, always choose a good quality mix that hasn't been lying around the garden center too long.
🌱 ERICACEOUS POTTING SOIL
Some plants need and prefer acid soil. This is when you need a soil mix formulated for acid-loving plants.
